Coffy was the third of four collaborations between actress Pam Grier and exploitation director Jack Hill, and was the film that really cemented her as an iconic Blaxploitation star.
It's basically a standard revenge thriller with a then-fashionable conspiracy aspect thrown in for good measure. The pacing is leisurely at best but there are some quite jaw-dropping moments of violence, including a shotgun-induced head explosion, a girlfight at a buffet, a lynching by car, and a baddie taking an inordinately long time to bleed to death from a punctured neck. However, it's Grier herself who really makes the whole enterprise sparkle; she packs enough spunk, sass and sex appeal to put a dozen lesser stars to shame.
While I slightly prefer Foxy Brown (Grier's subsequent and final film with Hill), this is still a must for fans of the actress.
