RAHUL 🥂’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Wild Robot is exactly the kind of film that reminds you why you fell in love with cinema in the first place. It’s the kind of story that sweeps you off your feet and takes you somewhere unforgettable—exactly what movies should be doing. DreamWorks has once again delivered a film that doesn’t just entertain; it inspires, it moves, and it reignites that spark of wonder we all seek when the lights dim and the screen comes to life. This is why we go to the movies: to feel, to dream, to escape. It’s the kind of experience that makes life a little more magical.
DreamWorks has long been miles ahead of Pixar in this regard. The problem with Pixar is that they’re stuck in their ways, like that one stubborn uncle who refuses to accept that the world has moved on. They’re still clinging to what worked years ago, thinking they can coast on past glories without evolving. But times have changed, and audiences demand more. Inside Out 2 felt like the epitome of playing it safe—a mediocre, by-the-numbers sequel that lacked any real risk or imagination. It’s been a long time since a Pixar film felt genuinely fresh, and Inside Out 2 did little more than retread familiar ground, bringing nothing new to the table.
In contrast, The Wild Robot is a breath of fresh air, demonstrating how storytelling can be ambitious, heartfelt, and visually stunning all at once. The film doesn’t just coast on its animation or star power; it builds a world brimming with life and emotion. It tackles profound themes with grace and maturity, using its sci-fi premise to explore connection, loneliness, and the search for meaning in a way that resonates far beyond the screen. It’s a film that doesn’t just aim for the young crowd—it speaks to the dreamer in all of us.
Even other animated films have outclassed Inside Out 2 with smaller budgets and more creative storytelling. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish pulled off everything that Inside Out 2 attempted, but with more wit, more heart, and frankly, a much bolder approach to animation. The Wild Robot joins those ranks, a testament to how far the art form has come while Pixar seems content to tread water. DreamWorks isn't afraid to push the envelope, to evolve, and The Wild Robot is a perfect example of what happens when you trust your audience enough to give them something challenging, beautiful, and new.
.
The Wild Robot is my Top Gun Maverick of 2024.
