Ariana and Cynthia I believe did stellar with what they were given, other than that? I really did not enjoy this, the movie is predictable from the beginning to end. It lacks so much depth with the characters I didn’t find myself getting invested in really anything..? They really hammer home that Elphaba is ‘different’ to the point where it’s annoying anytime a character interacts with her, I understand that’s how she feels all the time but as an audience it drags. Glinda as a character I found to be hard to like, I couldn’t tell if the movie wanted me to hate her or like her. She has her moments but it seems as if everything she does is selfish ( even if it’s a good deed ), maybe I missed something? The love interest whose name I don’t remember was boring to me, only being played up for laughs. The munchkin dude and Elphaba’s sister plot line really didn’t interest me either. I felt Elphaba’s sister’s inclusion was only a tool to enhance Elphaba’s tragic backstory and poor relationship with herself, other than that? The sister is barely even her own character and is forgotten by the end of the movie despite the tension in the beginning with her father and sister. I can admire the costume and set design but it looked and sounded so corporate. The mixing was horrendous where you can barely hear the orchestra for the songs, the dialogue is hard to hear as well. The music as well did nothing for me, sounded passionately generic despite the stunning vocal performances of Arianna and Cynthia. Nothing catchy or meaningful to observe with the music, either cut short or going on for too long. The color grading / saturation was very noticeable for me, coming across as a fake happiness, even with emerald city! But I’m most upset that this whole movie is also just exposition for the origins of The Wizard of Oz, and the part 2 of this long and tedious duo film! It’s build up to her ‘iconic hat and broomstick’ moment. I’m frustrated and disappointed because I wanted to like this sooo badly. I have unfortunately not seen the stage production so I don’t know if all my criticisms are with the story but I definitely look forward to changing my opinion with a live production!
