Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a movie that features wonderful (Academy Award worthy) Makeup, a zany Danny Elfman Score, an appealing cast, old school practical effects, a unique costume design & Tim Burton (FINALLY) back in his wheelhouse of directing kooky characters doing weird things. From a technical standpoint, I liked this movie. I chuckled throughout the movie too. Really enjoyed Michael Keatons commitment to the performance. That said, I do have some issues with the movie such as the villain played by Monica Bellucci. Her motives, character development & screen presence aren’t really felt. Although I did like the flashback scene that’s played in black & white & subtitles with her. I liked the other villain better, even if they’re slightly underwritten too. They’re at least more interesting & even are apart of an interesting twist. Without spoiling it, there’s certain elements of the execution of the twist where we hear the same exposition said twice, which wasn’t needed. The screenplay has a large canvas of characters & thus make them all feel rather two dimensional. This is ESPECIALLY felt in the third act where all the storylines converge in a messy fashion that also happens to feature three different endings. That said, I did enjoy this movie. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a fun time at the movies. Really appreciated the old school style filmmaking & despite my issues, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice comes recommended!
