Yay, another film where dumb people make it their whole personality and a film where dumber people think it’s glorifying Belfort.
My favourite performance from Leo. He portrays the titular POS with such utter manic energy and vigour, he hooks you in for 3 hours. Almost if that is intentional. Favourite supporting performances go to the brief Matthew McConaughey and we should be thankful for this film giving us Margot Robbie.
The way Scorsese portrays excess with regards to these absurdly wealthy and awful people is to the point of ridiculousness but I suppose that is the point. Considering how this film ends, Belfort is so much better off than he should be, reduced prison sentences and all. All the things he has lost, and yet he’s still turned to for advice at the end of the day? If that’s not criticism of his work and lifestyle, I don’t know what is.
That being said, I still think this is a weaker Scorsese. It’s absurdly entertaining but I think Marty has higher heights. Even with the rating I gave, if that’s the lowest Scorsese goes, it shows how good he is.
