Damien Chazelle’s stunning love letter to not just the classic musical but also just classic Hollywood in general. This is such a beautiful movie. From its gorgeous set design to its stellar musical numbers this movie is amazing. The core two performances from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are both some of their best and the two have insanely good chemistry. The film carries over themes of passion and the lengths one would go to achieve their dreams from Whiplash but definitely explores them in different ways. The film looks incredible too, the film makes beautiful use of colour. I think my favourite scene in this film is the final montage. It’s beautiful, moving and a great way to cap off the film. The music is also brilliant here. Not just the songs but also the score in general from Justin Hurwitz.
Overall, I really love this film and would easily consider it one of the best of the 2010s. A brilliant love letter to cinema of the past that is stunningly well executed. If for some reason you haven’t seen this it gets the highest of my recommendations.
