Fifty Shades of Grey shamelessly ripped this off.

]]>A cautionary tale of how greed (and a shit ton of drugs) can corrupt. DiCaprio, Robbie, and Hill are all incredible. Don’t know why it took me so long to watch this.
]]>The mystery in this is fine, nothing I found great, but the cast and characters are just incredible. I love all of the different personalities.

]]>Gerwig’s ability to portray coming of age is matched by very few of her generation. Saoirse Ronan does a great job displaying all of the likability (and dislikability) of one’s teenage years.

]]>Watching Charlotte Wells career is going to be amazing. She’s got tons of raw artistic potential.
]]>I agree with the general consensus on this. The story is fine, but it feels as if every scene was a couple minutes longer than it should have been. The cast (aside Bilbo and Gandalf) just didn’t have the charm of Jackson’s earlier trilogy.

]]>Commoner: But is there anyone who's really good? Maybe goodness is just make-believe.
Priest: What a frightening...
Commoner: Man just wants to forget the bad stuff, and believe in the made-up good stuff. It's easier that way.
Really fascinating film by Kurosawa. Truth can be hard to find when people are incentivized to lie.

]]>The tree scene was genuinely fucking funny. The rest of this was good for its era but nothing that I feel withstood the rest of time.
]]>This movie has been cut and pasted 100s of time since release and few, if any, have reached the same level of touching as the original. Chaplin encapsulates that “man of the people” feeling remarkably well.

]]>This film just works so much better with the 70s style. I like Burton’s recreation, but this just hits different.
]]>Using “Ken” as symbolism for “Men” is so blatantly ingenious. This movie is so brilliantly directed and funny that you can’t help but love it.
]]>Not even Melissa McCarthy could save this.

]]>Gusteau: You must be imaginative, strong-hearted. You must try things that may not work, and you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul. What I say is true - anyone can cook... but only the fearless can be great.
One of the greatest animated movies ever undeniably.
]]>This is comfortably better than any silent film I’ve ever seen. Both the performances and the cinematography are decades ahead of their time. I’m just speechless, this was beautiful.

]]>Watching Charlie Chaplin do anything is entertaining. Bring on the funny man.
]]>In the Mood for Love is certainly a Sunday morning type of watch. The film utilizes various forms of camera work to better display longing and desire alongside a pretty simplistic, yet profound, narrative. Recent films such as Past Lives and Moonlight clearly seem to draw influence from the cinematography and how it was used to display love as an emotion. So many shots involve looking through a window, doorway, etc in an attempt to give the feeling that the viewer is witnessing something secret and forbidden. It also utilizes several different long shots and slow motion cuts to demonstrate the allure of this forbidden fruit. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it and it’s a huge step forward in terms of camera work.
The beautiful cinematography and colors really help to build this incredible tension that I can’t remember experiencing in the medium. Although not much comes of the relationship, the innovative cuts, angles, and editing give the illusion that there is more going on in the mind of the duo. Again, just a fascinating use of the art form. I loved this first watch but I think this will age beautifully upon my rewatching.
]]>This wasn’t good but it wasn’t that bad. Melissa McCarthy is funnier than she gets credit for.
