There were so many moments I could feel low-quality writing coming, but it never did.
Seeing how many good movies have come out from places outside the typical, I didn't trust this one to be as good as people call it. The last good movie I've seen from DreamWorks was the last Puss in Boots, and that was great. I just didn't expect that much of a good movie. Skeptical on each scene, I won't even lie, except the beginning.
I was so into the idea of a robot who had absolutely nothing. A learning machine, plucked into a world without a purpose. I was so excited to see the existentialism played at hand, specially after watching a bit of a similar movie called “Flow”. It didn't go that route, but something in the writing felt like it was coming. The cringe moment, the stupid writing, the separation, the clichés that plague movies like this.
Nothing bad ever came, nothing wrong ever happened, but I didn't get that little extra more.
This is one of those movies that's the MOST solid it can be. It's got a great lesson, fun characters, chemistry, pretty good dialogue, but a fair amount that holds it back. The existentialist themes at the beginning, the contempt, and silence of the scenes. The eventual discovery of purpose, or that scene in the cave with the other robots. That's what was so good about it, and it became a bit cliché'd, but not in a bad way.
I love the animation, the lesson, and everything I could see. I loved the fox, the way Roz, our main character's sincerity, can come out as brutal honesty at times. The chemistry and personal stakes everybody has with her. The rescue scene made me quite emotional. It was those moments where the story does transcend the medium. Where something feels a little beyond its scope. I was waiting for way more of that.
Alas. Wonderful movie. The most I've enjoyed a DreamWorks movie after Puss in Boots. I hope they can grab things like it, and really explore those philosophical elements a little harder.
8.4/10. I don't know how a little goose can break glass from a clearly bulletproof ship.
