In case I’m not able to stomach this after today, I figured it’s now or never. It’s an acting showcase for both Stan and Strong but doesn’t offer up much beyond that. Despite Jeremy Strong being the 9th actor to portray Cohn on screen (and that’s excluding the actors who’ve played him on the stage), I think I would have still rather seen this focused more around Cohn and his perspective of the villainous schmuck he built in his image.
It’s completely made (outside of the inconsistent/irritating analog video filters) but doesn’t really justify it’s existence outside of the novelty of seeing a young Trump portrayed in a critical to negative light. The boldest they ever go is when it depicts Trump raping his own wife, which felt shocking in the moment until the ironic needle drop where it felt borderline distasteful. I’m not saying there isn’t a reason to ridicule the man, but this just doesn’t have the balls to say anything that your average liberal (or even most republicans) doesn’t already know about the man. I’d be surprised if this doesn’t fade from our collective memories pretty quickly, whether it garners any acting nominations or not.
