Brian’s review published on Letterboxd:
"Sometimes the Truth isn't Justice."
Likely to be Clint Eastwood's last feature film as director (he's 94 as of now), Juror #2 shows us why the maverick, versatile, filmmaker has been one of the best around, crafting a somber reflection on the American justice system and the fine lines of what can be right or wrong.
There's a calmness throughout Juror #2 that plays a direct parallel to an inevitability in the tension it creates.
Eastwood opens the doors to a courtroom for us to walk through as we observe a murder trial and see the jurors deliberate. The catch is that one of the jurors (played by an excellent Nicholas Hoult) could be responsible for the death.
Will this Juror keep quiet? Will he confess to his (likely) wrongdoing? Will he convince his fellow jurors that the man being prosecuted is innocent or will he vote to incarcerate him? Yes, the initial setup is a tad convenient but the dramatic tension, the questions this film asks is worth it.
The Savanah, Georgia location is only shown to us in fragments of pieces outside the courtroom - Hoult's home, who he shares with his expecting wife played by Zoey Dutch, a local dive bar and the road where the murder took place - but each place has a distinct feel (brought to life with purposeful sound design).
Each location is important because Juror #2 acts as a procedural of sorts as we recount the night of the murder, learning new bits of information along the way.
Memory, recollection and point of view play a large part in Juror #2, showing the fragility in how important this can affect one's life if on the line. And Eastwood's visualization to bring this to life is akin to Roshomon as the different perspectives gives us more insight to that tragic night.
It all builds and builds to a courtroom thriller akin to a lost genre of films that Hollywood used to make like all those John Grisham adaptations or Coppola's The Rainmaker but Juror #2s perspective of putting the guilty party be able to choose the fate of an innocent is a brilliant screenwriting decision, getting the most out of the medium as sounds, music and visuals play a huge part (Jonathan Abrams script is great).
Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Chris Messina all play a small part in crafting a huge impression while the remaining supporting players shine as well. But Hoult is the standout, showing a man whose guilt is eating away at him minute by minute, second by second as he must deliberate within himself what true justice is.
Is there truth in justice?
It's an important question we must ask ourselves and something very relevant at this specific point in time, which is why I'm sure that Eastwood wanted Juror #2 to be his Coda to an amazing career and something that will likely always be relevant in the years ahead.
