On February 2, 2021, it was announced that Wicked would officially move ahead with production after years of developmental hell. While I was excited, I was also nervous. Too often, movie musical adaptations fail to handle the source material with the care or thought it deserves. Scenes and songs get cut, character arcs are watered down, and the magic of the original is lost.
Wicked, however, is the complete opposite. This film is a love letter to musical theater fans.
I am convinced Jon M. Chu was put on this earth to direct movie musicals. His work on this film, along with the incredible team he assembled, is nothing short of masterful. His work brings Oz to life in a way that I don’t think any other director could.
The entire cast is phenomenal. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are absolutely perfect for their roles. Erivo makes every song seem effortless, while Grande steals every scene she’s in. They complement each other so well as they soar into movie musical history together.
Every time this movie does something incredible that leaves you smiling, it immediately tops itself with an even more breathtaking moment. It’s a nonstop celebration of magic and wonder. This is how every movie musical Broadway adaptation should be.
For the last couple of years, movie musicals as a whole have seen a drop in popularity when it comes to the box office. If any film can bring the genre back to life, it is and will be this one.
‘Wicked’ is the epic people have been waiting for—one that will reignite the movie musical genre and leave audiences changed for good.
