I love the kind of films Charlie Kaufman makes. Structurally loose narratives that explore deeply human, existential themes. The symbolisms and scenes in the house were surreal and quite brilliant, magnifying the themes of time and existentialism through the physical projection of Jake’s past and personality onto The Girl and the house. Having said that, it just didn’t quite have the poetic brilliance and emotional register for me to love it (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, being one of my favourite films ever and perhaps the film I’ve subconsciously compared this to, is the benchmark). Perhaps too cerebral for its own good, made only more frustrating with the final act which I didn’t like.
