Something has been lacking in David Fincher’s last two features, and I have found it to be style over substance. They’re both beautiful to look at, but Mank and The Killer just don’t maintain my interest on a narrative level the way almost all of his other films do. The Killer of course has great moments, my favorites being the suspenseful opening sequence and the Tilda Swinton segment. It’s not a bad movie. But compared to his masterpieces like Seven and Fight Club and Zodiac and The Social Network and Gone Girl, The Killer isn’t in the same league. Sadly, for much of the running time, despite the gorgeous cinematography and strong performance by Michael Fassbender, this one bored me.
