Probably being over-generous but I went into this with rock bottom expectations and came out thinking it's the best thing Burton's directed since Sweeney Todd (keep in mind that in my ideal world he would have been physically stopped from making anything post Mars Attacks though). Catherine O'Hara, Michael Keaton, and a handful of the gags actually work (the Soul Train one was delightful) and were enough to keep my interest while I watched Jenna Ortega attempt to elevate a pitiful excuse for a character. Winona either forgot how to play Lydia or no one knows what to do with her now that she can't be cast as ingenues anymore, and keep choosing to write her characters as neurotics.
I will not sit here and claim this deserves to exist or that it isn't full of massive problems you could have probably seen coming from a mile away. But I'm thankful for a mixed bag when we all know this could have been much much worse.
