“They worship everything and value nothing.”
I’ve been wanting to rewatch this for a long time now. My first watch was a while back and it didn’t go right. I just didn’t like the movie. I needed the rewatch because literally everyone loved this but me. Sadly, that still seems to be the truth.
This is one of those movies that I appreciate the ever living shit out of, but don’t like it nearly the same. Damien Chazelle is truly one of the most passionate directors I’ve seen on screen. It just spills from all the work he’s done to date.
This movie is really good. Don’t get me wrong, it really is a great piece of art. The Justin Herwitz is one of my favourite composers. The score is (even though not even close to being better than whiplash) brilliant.
The cinematography and use of color is also just awesome.
My biggest issues about this is the actual “musical” aspects and not being able to connect to the story as much as needed. The passion to the musical aspect is great to see, I just don’t “like” it that much.
It really hurts that even on second watch, I can’t connect to the story. I love both main characters. They’re both written really well. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have such great screen chemistry, I just can’t connect. It’s brutal.
One thing I was wrong about in my last review was the 5 year time skip. This time it hit a lot different. It might actually be my favourite part of the movie itself.
I’m so conflicted on what to rate it. I appreciate this movie so fucking much but again, I couldn’t connect story wise. God it’s terrible. Maybe I’ll raise it on third watch.
Also, If you put this movie over Whiplash, you’re genuinely brain dead. This movie just made me want to rewatch it. I’m going to go rewatch it.
