A quick preamble:
Ah yes. Looking back, 2015 was around the time I started to get more into film to the point of logging it via a notebook. I guess I got to this like everyone else did with very good word of mouth. I went to see this with my brother at the time who was confused during it and was even asking questions about the plot. It got to the point where we had to be shushed by someone and that's when I decided to always sit alone at the theatre.
With Furiosa out in theatres and this being a part of TIFF's Women in Action series, I was excited to revisit this without many interruptions. Walking into the lobby and seeing lots of people loitering, I wondered, all these people can't be here to see Fury Road, right? Well, I love being wrong in this case.
I really can't do too much to this review as I think much of what my Letterboxd friends and the consensus say has held up. This is a fantastic action movie, with many times where I kept thinking "How did they do that?" The fact that this gonzo world managed to get a budget like this + acclaimed to this day is such an accomplishment. Truly once in a lifetime. Some small notes to make:
- It's not the first image of the logos you see in rust and metal. The goddamn sound is what I noticed first. Holy crap. This is relentless. Loudest experience in the theatre so far? I enjoy seeing the drums and the Doof Warrior again. How does one get the job?
- Too many people say this is way too much, but I digress slightly. There are definitely pockets of breathing room in here. I do get mildly weary by the last sequence.
- I loved soaking up all the visual details again. How the War Boys operate (the v8 hand sign!), the Brannock Device as a foot pedal, those nipple clamps on the People Eater?
- Surprised but liked the small bits of humour with physical gags and lines here and there to lighten things up. Particularly love it when Max just knows the exact spots where the guns are hidden in the War Rig.
- If I had to say something bad, it would be the uncanny flashbacks. I would be ok with reducing or completely removing them. I have to assume this was added for audiences not familiar with and/or catch up with Max since it was 25 years since the last entry.
- I think this reignites the crush I had on Tom Hardy many years ago because goddamn I love the feral energy he brings to this version of Max.
- What I took away from this was the relationships. Maybe it's how in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where everything is taken from you, you end up not having much time to evaluate if you even like someone. Trust is the key and mutual goals lead to kind gestures (the boot exchanges!). And hey, you might end up rediscovering your humanity along the way. A bit cheesy when you put it like that but in a world like this, caring is invaluable. You gotta keep moving but you don't have to do it alone.
Overall: It certainly was a lovely day.
