One of the most frustrating-to-boring films of the year, an incomprehensible gothic fantasy romance that seems like it’s held together by dried chewing gum. Bill Skarsgard and fka twigs have some chemistry, but the insipid dialogue significantly diminishes it. The editing fails to offer genuine narrative logic, with scenes often just tossed together. There is pretty good cinematography, and the final act has a strong action sequence, but it comes too late to have a demonstrable impact on the whole experience. Bill Skarsgard looks the part, but his performance especially in the first half feels out of place. fka twigs fares worse, although I don’t think it’s through fault of her own.
