It Ends With Us is a very tricky film. On one hand, Justin Baldoni directs a very handsome film and pulls excellent performances out of himself, Blake Lively, and Jenny Slate. He also goes out of his way to not glamorize or exploit the scenes of domestic violence that form the basis of the film’s back half. However, the script is consistently awkward, and the staging of a love triangle that serves as the inciting incident for Ryle’s abuse feels discomfiting at best and reprehensible at worst. The film’s flashbacks also fit awkwardly in the film and adds unnecessary runtime to a film that practically begs to be tighter.
