The old adage 'Is stealing from a thief stealing?' but on a grander, more psychotic plane of fucked-out, cocaine laden existentialism: embezzling from a society that embezzles daily, with all the knock-back and even more of the manic depression. A strange oddity of a movie from a man in his 70's who by all accounts should be too old to make something this aggressively right now. What becomes even stranger in spite of this is the inceldom surrounding this character and most-so this movie, which is a shame as it becomes almost a chore to defend your liking it (so annoying given this is probably a top 3 Scorsese?) - it's every straight-white boys introduction to any form of genuine kino: another Pulp Fiction, Fight Club etc, which, like the latter becomes more an idolisation of what said filmmaker was trying to undermine. Just proving Marty right I suppose: an ego doesn't mean smarts, and watching a movie about that message and still managing to miss the point means an entire lack of brains.
