The Wild Robot is a very fine film, but needed to be more WILD to stand out.
Standing on the shoulders of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DreamWorks prove that the painterly 2.5 dimension style of animation is the fucking best.
In the state that the kids/family film industry is in, a heartfelt and mature approach is what we are more in need of, which his where Pixar famously succeeds at.
What they also achieve is brilliant characterisation, which unfortunately is what The Wild Robot lacks. I couldn't connect with them as much as I wanted to, even in how the film wears its heart on its sleeve. They all reminisce personality designs of other loved character arcs.
With the lusciously textured landscapes, the world-building is wonderful, but teases at intrigue beyond its island limits. Golden Gate Bridge underwater, the futuristic city - I wanted way more of this!
