Dreamworks and Sony are really making some of the best animation films of the past few years. I love seeing unique animation styles that aren't just the bland Disney/Pixar styles and The Wild Robot is anything but bland.
I knew this was going to pull at my heartstrings when I saw the trailer, and it definitely did, but I was still surprised by how emotionally involved I was. The themes that are explored here aren't anything ground-breaking but the way it explores them is done so well, and it manages to juggle so much without ever taking away from any single thing which is really impressive.
The music is great too, which I always expect from an animated film. I suppose my only nit-pick is that there's a scene that has licensed music that kind of took away from the emotional impact. It's funny because the director also made How to Train Your Dragon which has some of the best music in film so I was expecting a similar scene in this film to have that same impact.
There's so many great actors crammed in, most I didn't even notice who was playing who until the credits rolled. Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill both being unnoticeable, in a good way. The standouts though are definitely Lupita Nyong'o as Roz and Kit Connor as Brightbill. I will admit it took me a while to warm up to Kit as Brightbill, the voice didn't suit at first (at least for me) but it didn't take long until I was fully invested into his character.
I was waiting for 2024 to have an animated film that could be argued as one of the greats, since Beyond the Spider-verse has been delayed inevitably I thought there wouldn't be one this year but I'm happy I've been proven wrong.
