Smile 2

Smile 2

★★★½

I’m not denying that this is basically a beat for beat redo of the original with a new cast of characters and new locations, but I really enjoyed it. Call me crazy, I don’t care, but it’s fun and it’s full of cheap jumpscares that actually made me jump and it is just as unsettling as the first one, perhaps even more so. The opening scene is pretty awesome, I like how this picks up from the last movie quite well. I think that this is a lot gorier and has some more creative kills. I also think it lives up to its name A LOT more than the first one did. There are so many more people smiling in this one and it’s a beautiful thing to see. Naomi Scott is truly amazing in this, she gives a very genuine performance. She screams, she runs, she sings, she dances, she does it all. She is the glue that holds everything together in my opinion, she really scared me. There are some pretty intense scenes in this and I can say with the upmost confidence that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was always anticipating something and I’m glad that Parker Finn scrapped the whole investigative aspect of the first one and made this a full on attack on the senses that is truly relentless. This isn’t that new or unique and is just another run of the mill Smile movie, but I just really like the whole vibe it’s got going on and the characters are a lot more fun in a way, it’s hard to explain. This definitely got under my skin like the first one did and does its thing incredibly well. I REALLY enjoyed the ending and how it had SO many twists and turns. I always like the monster aspect of these movies and this definitely did not disappoint in that regard. I wish there was somehow more of the monster, I feel like the next movie should do more with that and judging by the ending, it seems like the curse will become something of an epidemic. So yeah, this is pretty cool. It’s not that inventive or anything we haven’t seen before, but it’s fun and is a lot less tedious than the first one. There are still slow moments, but it works for me. Anyway, if you enjoyed the first one, I’m sure you’ll like this and even if you didn’t like the first one, I think this is still worth a shot. At the end of the day, it’s just a silly horror movie with some creepy smiling people and some nice gore. I’m a little more hopeful for Parker Finn’s Possession, but I still don’t think a remake is needed at all. Also shoutout to Ray Nicholson, he looks just like his father in The Shining when he smiles.
