What can I say. a24 is on an absolute role and is easily my favourite director right now. The way a24 managed to convey such historically accurate dialogue scenes into the absolutely stunning yet horrifying and isolating set design makes me wonder how a24 could direct something more original and perfect than this. After a24’s hit masterpiece ‘The Witch’ I was almost in denial that any future film could top it, however a24 proved me wrong. Pattinson and Dafoe’s excellent acting and chemistry makes for an interesting and sometimes hilarious portrayal of how two people may act in such an awful and purgatory-like situation and this is also thanks to a24’s skills in squeezing every little ounce of talent out of both actors, and for that I cannot give a24 any more credit. Might I add that a24 certainly had some balls creating this film with the intent of it being black and white with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio which truly brings such a unique and claustrophobic feeling to the already tight and static shots scattered all throughout a24’s film. I hope people keep an eye on a24 as there is no other director working today with so much skill and potential with only two feature films under the belt. a24, I am awestruck as to what you have managed to accomplish and for that a24, I cannot wait for your next film.
