I fully expected this to be a rehash of the first one (á la Ghostbusters: Afterlife), but they really did something new with this one and it's all the better for it. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is so ridiculous and entertaining and exactly the kind of legacy sequel (or whatever it's called) that I'd like to see. There might be too much going on plot-wise for such a short movie and the emotional beats don't work at all, but Tim Burton brings back the needed campy and nutty energy for it all to totally work in the end. The old and new cast are fantastic, with Justin Theroux and Catherine O'Hara stealing the show completely. Same goes for Willem Dafoe actually, they all really understand the kind of movie they're in.
This surprised me a lot. One of my fav releases of the year, even though it might not be perfect... neither was the first one!
