This played out much differently than I expected from the trailer and promo, but great performances and a wholesome message made My Old Ass mostly enjoyable. Must admit I expected more of a sci-fi aspect to the old & young Elliott pairing, and for anyone going in looking for lots of Aubrey Plaza banter, she’s not in it that much. But her presence, more so even as an offscreen phone voice of wisdom to her younger self, is impactful.
That young lead Maisy Stella is going places, though. A natural in front of the camera without trying too hard who actually looks like a real person you’d see walking down the street in North America. Though the central romance didn’t sell me much on screen, the idea of what it represented tugged the heartstrings. Love your family & friends, look back upon Young You fondly and fairly. Be nice. Megan Park has the eye and the hand for this, and when her inevitable first big theatrical hit comes, I’ll be able to say I’ve been down since her turn in the Lifetime 2000s classic of my childhood: She’s Too Young.
