gabriel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Yeah as someone who usually dislikes Nolan's works, this does it for me. Exploring the world unbeknownst to powers that could destroy it. One of the biggest achievements in technology is one that could destroy us all, and it's in the hands of those we can't trust to do what's right. Oppenheimer makes it clear the severe weight it has on its titular character.
Everyone here gives it their all and for some, may just be their best performances yet. RDJ stands out to me as his energy on screen is simply powerful. His work in the last hour in the film might just be the thing that wins him an Oscar. Murphy is also fantastic, holding a sense of breath, calculation but also pure ignorance of the consequences to his actions. Even the female characters, which Nolan always manages to underwrite, are given so much care. Pugh and Blunt are amazing.
What people are here to see is the explosion, but the lead up to it is quite simply fantastic, Nolan manages to keep you invested in 3 hours of essentially just people talking, and that has to do substantially with the editing, which to me is some of the best I've seen in a film in recent years. Those 3 hours manage to cover so much on Oppenheimer's life, from his beginnings till the end. It just makes the test itself that much brilliant.
The visuals of this film are no doubt what people are here to see. The IMAX experience is quite simply fantastic. Watching it at the AMC CityWalk I got the front seats which kinda sucked but I was still completely captivated. Those full frame scenes were just incredible. The Trinity Test was a marvel to see, and the whole execution of it kept me captivated.
Believe the hype, this shit is incredible. Sucks so hard all the good seats are booked for the next month, but even still I'm gonna watch this again. Brilliant how people are lining up to watch essentially a 3 hour drama. Movies are so back.
