i'm in my lux lisbon era˚ ༘ ೀ⋆。˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
the virgin suicides is always lingering in the back of my mind– it's about the imprisonment of being a girl. it's so special to me because it's the perfect example of girlhood but told in an uneasy way– through boys' perspective, and because of that we cannot take anything as reliable. the girls feelings, their actions, anything. whenever there's an unreliable narrator(s), it's hard to make up the real story (in its entire). i suppose that's why that the lisbon sisters feel so one-dimensional; we never truly get to know them, only a little glimpse of their souls. the true reason of their sadness was never disclosed, although, obviously, we get the idea– being taken away from the world, repression, an idealistic upbringing, narcissist and authoritarian parents that eventually set their daughters out to self-destructive paths. each and every girl had their reason to want to disappear from the world, to cease to exist; but, the only one- maybe- that we can understand exactly-ish her driven forces was lux. she was irrevocably, unconditionally in love with trip (was he even the bad guy? perhaps. but not entirely his fault, he was just a young boy. even if he should've thought more carefully into her feelings and needs) , even when she was ignoring him (many girls do that. seem uninterested but in reality they're so in love, or at least have crush). she thought he was different, but he was not. yes, he was in love with her, or at least obsessed with the idea of loving her, yet like many boys he simply couldn't stick with it. he left her in the dark whilst she gave him everything. her innocence. she was never the same. after that, she slowly started to fade, from his memory, from other people's memories and from herself. her life was nothing but a bore and she desperately needed to blossom, outside. but instead she was stuck inside four walls. living she same day over and over again, like in a time loop. not just her but also her sisters (same thing with cecilia before she did it. she needed to see the world. no one gave her that, unfortunately). their only ray of hope to "live" was through imagination. as well, all the faintly interpretations of these girls and what their lives actually were like, Sofia Coppola did the most stunning work of art. not only bringing this to the big screen but also to, even if it's all through the boys' perspective, show girlhood in her own way. there's still so much of the girls' own perspective. Sofia was the perfect person to make this film come true. she dealt with everything so beautifully and with so much dignity (especially taking into account that it was her debut). I'll always trust her. she's a girl girls.
my only complaint was how they gave Josh Hartnett that ugly wig😭.
