Cannot imagine how Wicked could’ve been dealt any better justice than this, especially for fans of the original recording. Personally anticipated it being a downside that I’ve known the songs by heart since I was 16, but no. Chu’s vision is pitch-perfect splendiforous glee. Wonderful wonderful homage on top of (rightly) emphasizing Elphaba’s glorious actualization, fulfilling for me what I yearned for from The Substance: Healing integration. Giftedness meets vocation. She sees her younger self in that reflection reaching, grabs hold, and it’s, suddenly, the broom. How she flies. Defies. Got chills like Atreides riding the sandworm, like Kylo extending his hand and the lightsaber rising.
In sum, Wicked’s a noteworthy love letter to its exuberantal fans who’ve been singing The Wizard and I at the top of their lungs for decades now. Well done.
PS: Uh, Ariana’s awesome, like, maybe favorite best performance of the year level good (?), + Jonathan Bailey reminded me so much of Rupert Everett in My Best Friend’s Wedding, which. Yeah. Highest praise.
