“That's the way it crumbles... cookie-wise.“
I was struggling with what I thought about this film, as I highly enjoyed it but why? And I simply enjoyed it because it was so damn charming. Jack Lemmon (Baxter) was swell in this role, he made it fun to watch and each scene he was in I was excited. Baxter (and his bowler hat) was thoughtful, kind and mainly funny in a silly, quirky type of way; it never felt like he was trying to be funny it was just natural to him.
The plot is fairly straightforward, even though there are a lot of dramatic scenes, mainly when secondary characters arrive such as Dr Dreyfuss (Jack Kruschen) and Karl (Johnny Sevens).
I do wish that they did not end up together though, as I thought Baxter was too good for her as she was still in love with a married man and knowingly cheating.
Also, his apartment was so cute! When Margie (Hope Holiday) comes in to the apartment and calls it “snuggsville”, I thought that was an understatement. Especially for a bachelor’s apartment in the 60s.
