Shoutout to long biopics, gotta be one of my favorite genders
Okay, Girl, Interrupted isn’t overly long but it is pretty good. An emotionally high movie highlighting the importance of metal health and a journey of one’s self. It also provides a look inside mental hospitals and it’s inhabitants. This film goes through many different moods and tones throughout. Happy, sad, funny, scary - and given the diagnosis of our main protagonist, the shifting tones not only feel apt but intentional.
Winona Ryder is absolutely fantastic in this role. Everyone talks about Angelina Jolie when this movie is brought up but Winona is just great as Suzanne. Angelina Jolie is of course also great and pretty deserving of that Oscar. Her character was just so chaotic and she practically stole just about every scene she was in. Brittany Murphy was also good but not a whole lot of her as I would’ve liked. As for Jared Leto, his appearance didn’t ruin the movie for me. Thank god.
As far as directing goes, it’s simple but effective. There’s really nothing here that James Mangold does that pops out, but it’s solid and clear directing all throughout. I liked how during the first 30 minutes or so it jumped back and forth between the past and present in a fun way. Then at around the halfway point there’s just kind of a sudden shift that feels a bit forced in terms of the main characters actions, but it doesn’t ruin anything.
Girl, Interrupted is a solid drama. Very well made that’s filled with some immensely talented actors. The story is heartbreaking, yet uplifting. I feel like if you’re going through something, this may be a good watch for you.
