Brecht Jansegers’s review published on Letterboxd:
That woman deserves her revenge... and we deserve to die. But then again, so does she.
While not as unique and thrilling as its predecessor, this installment compensates for the first one's lack of emotion and depth, particularly in the dialogue that still retains the action feel of Kill Bill 1. I also appreciate how Tarantino subtly references his older work, making what is right in front of you near invisible. The structure of the trailer scene with the black mamba reminds me in some ways of the trailer scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken in True Romance. Additionally, I noticed that the lift down (revealing Beatrix hiding underneath the trailer) later reappears in the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds, where the Jews are hiding out in the basement. Speaking of references, the coffin scene with Ennio Morricone's score (originally written for Il Mercenario) is excellent. It proves that you do not always need an original score when something that has been used before works just as good (or better). Tarantino knew precisely which piece of music to choose, elevating that scene to another level.
The overall look and feel of Kill Bill 1 are fully present here, from the silhouettes and crash zooms to the split screens, creating not just a continuation of the story but also maintaining its unique style, making it a perfect sequel. The only thing that really bothered me was Tarantino planting the idea of Beatrix and Bill crossing swords during sunrise but then concluding it with the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique instead (which is obviously just as cool but far less cinematic).
Really wish I had Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on physical because I believe the ultimate experience would be to watch both films as one, without having to interrupt to change the disc.
