Very sturdy film all around and actually found myself enjoying it way more than expected. Like everyone else, I found Cynthia Erivo to be pretty astonishing in this role, she is just in total control of this performance and it’s pretty unbelievable how talented she is. Ariana Grande was also delightful here and an excellent fit. As someone who has never seen the broadway production of Wicked, I was pretty enchanted with the world building and the set design. The film is quite ugly pretty often though, just a very muddy array of colors everywhere.
My complaint just kinda lies with how absurdly long this is and how it’s only part 1 of this story. We only really got to the meat and potatoes in the last 30 mins or so which definitely made the film feel pretty bloated.
I think Wicked accomplishes exactly what it set out to while setting up a likely far more interesting sequel. The “No One Mourns the Wicked” sequence alone is honestly worth the price of admission so I’m not mad at this film at all.
