🎄John McCreary🎅’s review published on Letterboxd:
another eggers movie that engages an era open heartedly no matter the mythology with the kind of craft flex that is usually missing throughout the year. physical violation, sexual appetites, dreams, prophecies, madness, and any other mix of the darker aspects of human nature seem to be pet themes for the director who deploys them here to put his spin on a familiar story. i’ve seen people talk about this being “horny” and i don’t think that’s very apt- there’s an eroticism at play, but the balancing act is how it’s defined by the physical body betraying the soul (relishing something you don’t want) and the actual abuse/rape that is happening textually. lily also very deserving of kudos, an excellent physical demand. i. very much appreciated how much of the narrative is from her gaze and the way that she ultimately stands up to an unstoppable dark force.
i could go at length with the color grading, shadows, and compositions for the entirety. however, just enjoying the castle journey alone was worth the price of admission with the moody set designs around the forest and trance like motion hoult’s carriage approaches. there’s that narrow field of vision where all the trees are silhouetted as the snow falls on his steps already behind him. the way these images are edited together made me feel like i was under a cinema spell. i can’t wait to watch this again without the constant train of people coming and going from my theater, this is a feast for the eyes and ears that also plays a different tune to the same song that’s been sung many times before.
Shantel: On theme with the rodent boyfriend era, I can see why Mr Thomas has a lot less going for him than you would think. Girl… get it I guess
