Y2K is basically Superbad meets iRobot….. except, it’s absolutely not.
I was a little bit curious on the account that A24 didn’t do a whole lot of advertising for this. That made me speculate, but after watching the trailer I thought at the very least it would be a ‘dumb funny’ hyper violent, nostalgic ride. What we actually got was a few little cameos showing late 90’s products, 5-7 minute sequences of good practical effects of random robots mowing down annoying background characters, and a love interest relationship that just doesn’t work, like in the slightest.
It feels like this film tries to focus on the relationships amongst the characters we’re introduced to instead of the overall purpose itself. The glaring problem we run into with that is the fact that the group of character we follow are some of the most ‘dry’ random personalities I’ve seen. Another big issue with that is that they kill off the only redeemable fun character within the first 15 minutes. That was just wild and downhill from there.
The biggest question you’ll ask yourself every 5-10 minutes is WHY. Why are we doing this, why are these the conversations we’re having, why are we stuck with two background characters trying to build some form of chemistry, why are these characters doing this. It’s just a cluster of Whys you have to ask yourself every 5 minutes when something completely stupid happens.
