Because of Nicolas Cage, I will not be singing happy birthday at anyones birthday party for the rest of eternity!!!! 🎂🚫
Immediate out of theater reaction: I’m soooooooo happy that this turned out so incredibly great!!! This has been my most anticipated film in a very long time and I had it put so high on a pedistal. Then, the moment of truth, watching it on the big screen a day early with a packed crowd….. I think this deserves 5 stars just for being the most creepy, unsettling experience I’ve seen in like…. EVER
Although I wouldn’t say this is necessarily a scary film, and it’s most definitely got the a24/neon horror vibe (who woulda thought amiright), make no mistake, the creepiness will make up for any bodies expectations wanting a “certain type of scary”. Part of that comes from an unsettling tone that starts with its first 5 minute opener, all the way up until the credits roll. Oh, yea I forgot, probably the biggest driving factor as well, NICOLAS FUCKING CAGE… If this isn’t a career best, it has to be a top 3. It’s like Cage channeled his inner demons and decided to create a character that would make Hannibal cry…
The cast all round is soooo good, but I also have to mention Maika Monroe. Holy horse shit. She was just as unsettling on screen as Long Legs… ok, not that much, but she plays the “unhinged mute, obviously seen some shit” fbi agent better than anyone I’ve seen. When her and Cage are on screen, you’re literally glued. They both absolutely killed these roles.
Surprisingly funny, incredibly tense (LIKE VERY), and undoubtedly the creepiest/unsettling film I’ve ever seen. 10000% this movie ruined my drive home and yes, I will be paying to see this in theaters multiple more times because this is the type of feeling you don’t get in most horror films anymore.
