A very interesting stand alone apocalyptic style film staring Nicolas Cage in one of his more serious toned roles.
Although the plot doesn’t do anything new for the genre, it still works incredibly well. You have 3 main characters ( 2 brothers and a dad) with 3 totally different personalities trying to survive in this deserted earthly wasteland…. Oh, there’s also monsters that try and kill them at night.
There’s two main things I really liked about this movie, the ambiguity and the monsters. I enjoyed not really knowing how everything came to be and you don’t really know anything more upon conclusion. You’re just watching these characters develop and survive, that’s it and it works great.
The monsters of the film are so different and unique as well and I’m incredibly happy a low budget film didn’t shy away from showing exactly what they were and what they looked like. They’re so different from anything I’ve seen before and the fx team did incredible with the designs.
The only complaint I had was the handycam look, which I eventually got used too but damn did it aggravate me in the beginning.
Overall this was a pretty solid film that I enjoyed. I’d say it’s like A Quite Place meets The Road (2009) that worked soooo well !
