Escape from New York

Escape from New York

This movie has one of the best concepts I've seen and it delivers and makes a super fun, over-the-top action flick. The movie also has a super cool and macho main character played by Kurt Russell that's so iconic.

Made on a mere 6 million dollars, all the effects in this movie have aged so well. John Carpenter said that he wanted to portray New York as a "jungle", and it really does, the entire place feels so murky and apocalyptic. It's really surprising how they managed to make such a large-scale action flick on such a low budget. The score is this film is also good. It feels so 80s with all the synths and it's composed by John Carpenter himself and it's so iconic. It's definitely an underrated score.

The opening narration with Jaime Lee Curtis is also such a great way to open to this film. It doesn't feel like their dropping a bunch of exposition on you and they give you just enough information so that there's still some unanswered questions that keep you engaged. Her voice and the score gives me chills when I watched it.

One issue I had was that Kurt Russell's performance didn't have much depth to it, he was just a regular 80s action hero. This is what they were going for, but in The Thing, it felt like Kurt Russell was bringing something into that role and it feels missing in this film. Another issue was that I wasn't a huge fan of the side characters other than the duke. They fell flat in terms of development and I ended up not caring about them in any way and they were kind of boring. Also, why did the President have a British accent??? But, overall this was just a fun 80s action flick that had a great score and concept.
