Ecclesia cathedralis Dunelmensis, sedes episcopalis Dunelmi urbis, aedificatus est curantibus Willelmo de Sancto Carilefo (episcopus ab anno 1080) successoribusque Ranulpho Flambard (ab 1099) et Galfrido Rufo, episcopo ab 1133 usque in 1140, quo anno domus capitularia perfecta est. Porticum Galilaeam Hugo de Puteaco exstruxit, episcopus ab 1153 usque in 1195, sed finem borealem, "sacellum novem altarium" nuncupatam, aedificare iussit Ricardus Poore qui episcopus ab 1228 usque in 1237 meruerit. Corpora sanctorum Aidani et Cuthberti ibi iacebant.

Aevo recentiori restitutionem ecclesiae Iacobus Wyatt inter annos 1795 et 1796, Georgius Gilbertus Scott anno 1859 iterumque inter 1874 et 1876 curavit.
