Just Dance 2023 Edition is the fourteenth game in the main Just Dance series, serving as the first annual song pack for the Just Dance service.[1] Marking a switch to a live service model, it is the final annual game as all future releases will be added through updates and annual song packs to the Just Dance service.[2][3]
The game was revealed on September 10, 2022, as part of Ubisoft Forward. The game was released on November 22, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. A Google Stadia version was announced,[4] but on September 29, 2022, Google announced that Stadia would shut down on January 18, 2023.[5]
Similar to the previous game, the game is offered in three different editions: a standard edition; a Deluxe Edition, which comes with a three-month subscription to Just Dance+; and an Ultimate Edition, which comes with a one-year subscription to Just Dance+.

- Online multiplayer: For the first time in the Just Dance franchise, players can enjoy the full game online with up to five other players around the world with Online Groups (online connection required). All players will connect to the host’s menu, allowing them to interact with each other through the new emote stickers system, choose songs, and hit the dance floor together, no matter where they're located. Online Groups will support cross-play, while players can continue to enjoy local multiplayer as well.
- New art direction and redesigned user interface: Just Dance 2023 Edition will have a fresh look and feel, immersive 3D worlds, and intuitive navigation menus.
- Powerful recommendation system: The new and improved recommendation system offers players personalized playlists and curated songs.

Players can personalize their dancer card to fit their own personality, by modifying the avatar, background, name badge, and alias. They can also redeem points to receive emote stickers, which can be used to communicate with other players in Online Groups.
- Free content updates: Just Dance 2023 Edition will now provide regular, ongoing updates so players can expect new game modes, songs, and themed seasons for years to come.

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series
Content descriptors: Comic Mischief, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Lyrics
Other: Users Interact, In-Game Purchases (Switch, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5)
Rating Summary: This is a music-rhythm dancing game in which players perform choreographed routines by following the movements of on-screen characters. Players score points by accurately moving their bodies in time to the music and scrolling indicators. One dance routine depicts a character avoiding electrical attacks from a giant robot while using dance moves to cause the robot’s arms to explode. In another sequence, an animal is depicted sitting on a toilet reading a newspaper. Some songs contain the word “hell” and references to alcohol (e.g., “And I’m sippin’ on that bub”) and tobacco (e.g., “Exhale now I look like a smoker”)
PEGI Rating
Category: 3
Content Descriptors: In-Game Purchases
Outline & Issues: Rhythm dancing game in which players learn and perform dancing steps by following the dancing coaches on screen. These are professional dancers, disguised with costumes according to the song and music played, who perform in front of an animated background. This game offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items, in the form of a subscription service, which some parents or carers may want to be aware of. Parents, carers or other responsible adults should check to see what is being offered before making any purchase on behalf of a child. It should be noted that the game can still be played without the need to purchase such items. One song features a witch-like person dancing and briefly cackling. While the song is a little eerie, it is not particularly scary.
Reception
The Nintendo Switch version of the game received a Metascore of 76 on review aggregator Metacritic.[7] Critics noted the change to a live service model has potential but were mixed in how they felt about it now. Hardcore Gamer saw it as a positive because this will cost players less money in the long run, while GamersRD found the need to be connected to the Internet for the game to work frustrating.[7] In a 69/100 review, SpazioGames criticized the game’s lack of features compared to its predecessors while still acknowledging the potential of the game.[7]
Trivia
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game in the series to be revealed in September.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition features the first major game HUD change since Just Dance 2019 for 8th-generation consoles.
- Furthermore, it makes use of the Unity engine. According to the GDC 2023 keynote, they used the engine’s UI toolkit to create the menu UI and HUD.
- In the 1.1.0 update (the Season 1: Lover Coaster update), the HUD was given a minor update. A line has been added below the player’s name, and only earned stars are shown in the middle below their name. Besides, a new crown sound effect for when a player has taken the lead has also been added, and the Gold Move effect would only play once during wave Gold Moves.
- In the 1.2.0 update (the Season 2: Showdown update), the HUD was given a major update: several HUD elements, including the stars, now pulse to the beat; the pictogram bar now has a flashing rectangle on top of the pulsing bar, which only pulses on the second and fourth beats of the song; the star sound effects have been fixed to play the right one for each star instead of delaying them by one star (the effect for the first star would play when earning the second one, the effect for the second star would play when earning the third one, and so on). Besides, the Gold Move effect has been updated as well, and now it no longer plays only once during wave Gold Moves.
- The 1.3.0 update (the Season 3: Beach, Summer & Vampires update) reverts it back to its original star sounds, while the 24.0.0 update (the Just Dance 2024 Celebration Event update) reverts it back to its proper star sounds from the 1.2.0 update.
- Furthermore, it makes use of the Unity engine. According to the GDC 2023 keynote, they used the engine’s UI toolkit to create the menu UI and HUD.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game in the main series since Just Dance 4 to not be available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
- Hence, Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game to not be compatible with any camera accessories nor the PlayStation Move since Just Dance 2.
- Phone camera support would later be added on December 12, 2023.[6]
- Hence, Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game to not be compatible with any camera accessories nor the PlayStation Move since Just Dance 2.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition has no routines that must be unlocked through gameplay, instead making all of them immediately available upon purchase. Thus, it abandons the series standard of unlockable routines, which was present in every game from Just Dance 3 to Just Dance 2022.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game since Just Dance 2018 to not have a Daddy Yankee song in the first set of songs revealed.
- It is also the first game since Just Dance 2014 to not include a Trio routine in the first set of songs revealed.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition uses a new logo for the first time since Just Dance for the NTSC region and Just Dance 4 for the PAL region.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game to be only available via digital download, as physical copies only come with a Nintendo eShop/PlayStation Store/Microsoft Store code.[8]
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the third game in the main series to be rated E by the ESRB. It is preceded by Just Dance 2019 and Just Dance 2021.
- It would have been the fourth if Just Dance 2 had kept its original ESRB rating (E).[9]
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game in the series to include the Mild Cartoon Violence ESRB rating descriptor.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the second game to have all alternate routines playable from the start since their introduction in Just Dance 2.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game since Just Dance 3 not to use album coaches.
- Album coaches for the new songs however have still been created to be used in 舞力无限.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the third game to, if the player continues after pausing, have a countdown before resuming the dance, after Just Dance 4 and Just Dance Wii 2.
- The countdown goes "3, 2, 1, DANCE!"
- This feature had been absent from the series for 10 years.
- With the new major game HUD change since Just Dance 2019, Just Dance 2023 Edition is the fifth game in the series in which the menu icons are cropped from squares into another shape (in this case, rectangles).
- However, as 舞力全开 still uses the assets from Just Dance 2020, modified versions of the icons for the songs and their routines that are cropped into squares and lack their titled have been created to be used there.
- During online multiplayer, the score feedback for other players are shown, depending on the lag, when the in-game HUD is hidden during the first and last few seconds in some songs from Just Dance 2015 (first few seconds only) to Just Dance 2017, as well as every song in Just Dance 2022 and Just Dance 2023 Edition, besides the launch songs in the Just Dance+ catalogue.
- The "Beat Vibrations" option, which has been in the Nintendo Switch version of every Just Dance game since Just Dance 2018, has been added to the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions. Because of the change, the controllers now vibrate to the rhythm of the music.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game that uses map backgrounds since their introduction in Just Dance 2020 where the map backgrounds are not edited to appear in only one or two colors and instead have the backgrounds appear exactly how they are in the routines.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game since Just Dance 2018 to not have a song by Blackpink.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game since Just Dance 2016 not to include a song by Ariana Grande in the main track list.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the first game since Just Dance 2018 to feature a system keyboard in the search bar.
- Just Dance 2023 Edition marks the first time the available songs in the trial version have been changed after the initial release (in this case, in early April 2023). The first available demo featured Dynamite (Extreme Version) and Sweet but Psycho, whereas the updated one featured If You Wanna Party and Walking on Sunshine.
- Avatars are replaced by in-game coaches, similar to 舞力全开:活力派.
- Instead of the Just Dance Controller app being updated to support Just Dance 2023 Edition like previous years, a new app was made for controlling Just Dance 2023 Edition while the existing app is still used for 2019-2022.[4]
- The Xbox website for Just Dance 2023 Edition initially stated that the game would be available for Xbox One, despite the official Twitter account and the official website stating otherwise. This was later fixed.
- Also, when choosing the platform to buy the game on the official website of Just Dance, it is shown that the game is available to buy for Xbox One.[1]
- In promotional images, "YEAH" feedback icons are mixed with regular scores, despite the former only being obtainable when a Gold Move occurs.
- Additionally, pictograms are much smaller than in the actual game.
- On October 21, 2022, Just Dance promoted a contest in partnership with the beverage brand Splash Blast and Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, where some of the prizes were exclusive avatars in Just Dance 2023 Edition and a chance to spend a vacation in the aforementioned hotel.[10][11]
- The following routines in the worldwide release were not deployed until hours before the earliest release by time zone:
- From December 1 to December 3, 2022, Just Dance’s Dutch Instagram page promoted a giveaway where anyone from Belgium or Netherlands could participate. The prizes included the game itself for Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5, a customized JanSport backpack with the Just Dance logo, two pins (one with Panda’s head and one with a disco ball), and a set of stickers, which included emojis of Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), Oh No!, Physical, and Rasputin.[12]
- Just Dance 2023 Edition won a The Game Accessibility Conference award for "Best Representation" for their inclusion of a wheelchair user in Radioactive.[13][14][15]
- In the Spanish version of the game, the sorting system "Effort (highest to lowest)" is incorrectly translated as "Esfuerzo (bajo a alto)", despite "bajo a alto" actually meaning "lowest to highest".[16][17]
- Just Dance 2023 Edition is the second game in the Main Series to not include any song from the 1990s after Just Dance 2016.
