These compositions were originally created by Johan Carøe as part of his work for the Danish film, The Great Silence (“Den Store Stillhed”).
Handpicked from the core film score, rearranged, and refined through a process of remixing and mastering, the 13 tracks now take on their own life in the spirit of the film’s aesthetic.

Virtual instruments, choir, and Johan’s living room cello recordings were treated to simultaneously mirror and contrast the film’s look and feel, delicately playing into the classical holy symbolism translated into something more gritty and digitally worn.
Carrying both darkened instrumentals and ornamented suites of uplifting light, the album sets its own tone of what one could label holy minimalism or sacral lo-fi.

It is music that plays both with and against the film's original aesthetic of numbing spaces and modern architecture through the everyday routine in an unnamed monastery.
“The Great Silence,” Carøe's fifth album, is both an expansion and a retelling of an already immersive film about kinship, trauma, and reconciliation.
