Three reddish-brown oak leaves, backs dotted with dew, rest near my front door. One balances at the edge of the black rubber door sill ramp, while the others splay on cool grey concrete, near the grey-green siding. Evokes, I hope, Mondrian.

They're hidden now, because of course we had our first snow fall--excuse me, "wintry mix." How's the weather by you?

Serious rain for the first time in two months. Leaves in my yard have been complained about (again) by one of my (anonymous) neighbors and I have to "maintain my property" within five days, or else. I wish I could move my house away from these people who want the neighborhood lawns to all look alike.

Oh man, the only thing worst than lawns are neighbors who care too loudly.

I mean, they makes sense if you happen to live in a temperate island nation with constant rain. Your empire spread to a hundred different climates! Let go of the lawn!

Oak leaves are so beautiful. Maples are lovely but there's just something about an oak. We're supposed to get our first snow this weekend but so far just a mildly chilly wintry mix as well.

Oak trees are fabulous, and our yard features three kinds. I appreciate how they hold so tightly to their leaves throughout the winter, providing a sibilant rattle to the whistling winter winds.

My town was mostly an oak savanna before the colonialists arrived.

ALL THE ACORNS! I've longed to make acorn flour, but all the how-tos I've consulted begin "place acorns in a net bag in a stream for six weeks," and I'm just not equipped.

When I was in sixth grade, I adored the early popular science book, Microbe Hunters, where I learned about van Leeuwenhoek's positive obsession with lenses, which led to the first microscope.
