Visitor Quick-Start Guide

Last updated: November 25, 2024
Audience: Visitors

Welcome to the UW! This guide provides an overview of technology tools and services that visitors can access while on campus, provided by UW Information Technology and other UW units. If visiting a specific college or department, contact that department’s IT office to learn about their technology offerings and recommendations for guests.

Get Connected

For more information see Wi-Fi Access for Visitors.

Wireless internet access is available throughout all three UW campuses.

Event-specific Wi-Fi: Some UW-based events arrange for Wi-Fi access for attendees. If visiting for an event, check to see if your event offers Wi-Fi access.

Otherwise, visitors may access the UW Wi-Fi network in one of the following prioritized ways as listed by wireless network SSID (Wi-Fi network name):

  • Eduroam: Visitors who use eduroam at their home institution may use their home institution credentials to sign into UW’s encrypted eduroam network. Contact your home institution for support connecting to and using Eduroam.
  • Eduroam: Visitors who do not have eduroam credentials may get free third-party credentials by registering at AnyRoam.net. These credentials can then be used to log into UW’s encrypted eduroam network. Note: UW does not provide support for AnyRoam; please contact AnyRoam with questions or issues.
  • University of Washington: Select the ‘guest connect’ option from the captive portal splash page presented after selecting this network SSID. (If page does not present, enter ‘uw.edu’ in your browser and it should pop-up.) This service provides a three-hour connection to the Internet. If needed, ‘guest connect’ can be selected again after each 3-hour session expires. This network is unsecure and unencrypted.
  • University of Washington: This should be the access method of last resort used only if all prior methods do not meet the visitor’s needs. UW faculty and staff can provide visitors (via online registration tool – see Temporary UW NetIDs) with a temporary personal UW NetID. This temporary UW NetID is then used by selecting the “Continue to login” option on the University of Washington wireless network captive portal splash page. This network is unsecure and unencrypted.
