no its more of "they learn" if they get blocked by a block only, they avoid blocks altogether, but if they make it where they get blocked by water and a block, they avoid both

yes the checkpoints are on certian blue blocks, press r to go, on the edge shows a save file icon for the blue blocks you last saved
