Mischievous Kiss (イタズラなKiss Itazura na Kiss) is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Kaoru Tada. Itazura na Kiss began to be serialized and published in 1990 by Shueisha through Margaret magazine. It became successful very quickly and became the manga series that Tada became known for in Japan.[1] Despite its success, the manga was never completed due to the unexpected death of the author in a house accident while she was moving to another house with her husband and son. However the manga series continues to be published with the permission of the artist's widower.[2]

Itazura na Kiss is a gem to the shoujo demographic, as it is the mother of a lot of cliches found in today's shoujo series. Despite the fact that it is 2 decades old, it still stands out as unique for it has the series follow the main characters well into their life, over a span of 10 years.[3] The producers of the anime adaptation call the original manga "the bible of romance" for its influence on later manga such as Marmalade Boy and Fruits Basket.[4]

Outside Japan, the series was licensed by Digital Manga Publishing in North America.

As of November 26, 2014, DMP translated Itazura Na Kiss Volume 11 has been released.[5] The following Volume 12 will be released on April 29, 2015.[6]

Manga, Anime & Drama Differences[]

There is a significant difference between the Manga and the later episodes of Anime adaptation. Although some parts were depicted faithfully from the manga, there would be minor changes with additional scenes, or major story overhaul where certain events in the original manga is completely removed or presented in a revised way, even having manga chapter subplots condensed into one, to be able to include the most important highlights in the lives of Naoki and Kotoko in the 24-episode anime (excluding the special).

Although the manga remained unfinished with Naoki asking Kotoko if is she is pregnant, the anime's ending was revealed to have been patterned to what the late Kaoru Tada planned to write for the manga's finale. This was the first adaptation after already having two versions, to have an ending which could be considered half canon, courtesy of the author's husband.[7]
