Mob scales Doon School walls to demolish ‘illegal’ mazar on premises
Members of Sanatan Sanskriti streamed the alleged demolition live on social media, sparking a row over the security breach
A right-wing outfit allegedly demolished what they claimed was an illegally constructed mazar inside a prestigious residential school in Dehradun Wednesday.
Members of Sanatan Sanskriti streamed the alleged demolition live on social media, sparking a row over the security breach at Doon School — an elite all-boys institution attended by the children of several public figures.
The video purportedly showed some members scaling the walls of the institution to get in and tearing down a small structure under a tree.
Radha Dhoni, the president of the group, alleged the structure violated the chief minister’s directive against religious edifices in public institutions. In the livestream, Dhoni is purportedly heard justifying the demolition, claiming: “They were building a mazar where there used to be Saraswati pooja. It’s strange that schools would have mazars now”.
Doon School has refused to comment on the issue and has not made a formal police complaint. Meanwhile, Dehradun District Magistrate Savin Bansal told the media that the administration had not issued demolition orders.
“However, we did send a team including the sub-divisional magistrate to the place to verify the facts related to the mazar and ensure that law and order are maintained,” he said.
