Sigh, I suspect Evan's sphincter is very moist as there's a lot of bum licking going on on pump.io today. Bit OTT with the gratitude IMO folks. :-P
maybe some people feel like they have to make up for OTT complaining and ungratefulness of some other people

Build essentials and gcc aren't fully installed it seems. I was able to build pumpa but only got it to segfault on my x86 & ARM boxes.

  • Three windows

2013-07-14T15:37:10Z via Identi.ca Web To: Public

So tyhe one on the left is identi.ca logged in with the name Peter Cannon (You cant see that) on the right is the Microca.st account supposedly logged in from identi.ca using my identi.ca credentials but as you can see a pretty useless page.

The one in the middle is me logged into Microca.st with my Microca.st credentials and that has a timeline but of it's own.

I take the view the window top right should refelect bottom middle which in turn should be drawn across by the left window?

Jesus I just want one timeline with all the streams from all the servers, how hard can it be? I'm trying not to say horrid things about pump.io I really am but stuff like this leaves me no choice and folks cant say it's me or deny it's a problem, I've given screenshot evidence for Pete's sake!
Peter Cannon is a separate account from dick_turpin, so of course your timeline will be different, because both your accounts (probably) follow different people and different people follow each of your accounts. And even if I'd follow both your accounts (which I do, maybe) I might decide to share a post with your identi.ca account but not with your microca.st account. So your timelines might be similar, if you follow the same people, but they will never be identical. And even if everyone would treat both your accounts identically, your timeline will STILL be different, because your own posts will of course only appear in one account. My advice would be to use one account and leave a note on the other one, so your followers can find you again.

    axel668 (inactive) at 2013-07-14T15:54:46Z

Peter: when you are logged in, what you see on the "Home" page is all the stuff from people you follow. Your microca.st and identi.ca accounts follow different people. It sounds like you want to have a global public timeline, which we don't have yet. See https://github.com/e14n/pump.io/issues/656

    Peter Cannon at 2013-07-14T16:29:51Z

You're like a dog with a bone. To head off the exclamation of despair that's coming. The public firehose of data will only be posts that are marked as public. Anything marked as just to people's followers will presumably not be on the public stream. And since, once again, your Identica account and your microcast account are completely separate entities you will still see different activity on the completely separate streams.

I'm still confused, It looks like my identi.ca account has logged in but all it wants to do is register a new account?
As your friend said - 'Now you can Log in to Microca.st with your identi.ca credentials. From there you can only log out of Microca.st.' Or view/update posts/comments that you are entitled to see/update on Microca.st (but you need the full URL).

    Andy C at 2013-07-14T14:35:30Z

What do you mean "Log in"? That is logged in? I'm logged in with my Idenit.ca details. This is mental.

So Paul Chambers, who has the patience of a saint by the way, wrote this "Explanation for Dummies" for me. I think I get it now, kind of. Having said that I tried his example and the Auth bombs out for some reason?

I see an issue. [email protected] and[email protected] are two different accounts.

create a new account at microca.st and choose another server instead of new login name and account. The other server info will be theidenti.ca account.

Then you can follow me at [email protected]from your main identi.ca account. You should only have a login logout opportunity over atmicroca.st.

One place to post from among different services. If you choose identi.ca as your main account, keeping your established relationships over there then that is where you will post too and anyone over at the other pumps, that are linked withidenti.ca will be able to follow you from there. Make sense?

In other words, let use the big three and assume they use pump.io.

Say Facebook, god forgive, is your main social media account. You make friends there, make posts, etc. Now you can Log in to Google plus with your Facebook credentials. From there you can only log out of Google Plus.

But you can now go back to Facebook and create posts, upload pics, whatever. Your Facebook people will see. Now you can circle people from Google Plus. Google plus people will now be able to interact with you on Facebook and they will see your posts.

Now throw in twitter. Go to twitter and join up using "an account on another server."

Now whatever you post on Facebook will go to twitter and Google Plus. You will be able to make friends with people from G+, Twitter and now Facebook.

I thought I understood it. Now my head just hurts.

    Andy C at 2013-07-14T14:09:37Z

Actually so did I but It's not happening? I think I'm logged into Microca.st with identi.ca's details (It says Peter Cannon as opposed to the default of dickturpin) however all I'm getting is "Get started" screen that wants to create an account? But more importantly what do I do next? I mean have I got to have all the tabs open, if I close the tab does that sever the connection? This is way too much work, G+ is much simpler.

    Peter Cannon at 2013-07-14T14:23:44Z

What about those of us that "Explanation for Dummies" is too complex?<p>How about an intro to the pump-io web interface for small furry creatures.

  • pump.io

2013-07-14T05:24:41Z via Identi.ca Web To: Public

It would seem I don't 'get' (Understand) this pump.io stuff? How it's Federated in any way, shape, or form is beyond me. As you can clearly see the time line on these two servers (Top left: Microca.st & identi.ca) are totally different.

The ability to log into A-another server with my account(s) credentials I understand but I thought the idea was to have, in effect, a mirrored stream across the servers irrespective of the server you are logged into surly that's Federation isn't it?

So if I understand it correctly if I stay on Microca.st or A-another server or have my own instance as Evan Prodromou wants us to have so that it eases the load on, for example Identi.ca, how the hell am I supposed to see the conversations on what are in effect hundreds of mini little communities? That's not Federated, it's not even progress in my book, services should draw outsiders in not create multiple islands on the internet.

    Just saying. :-)

When I go to another server, and use my Webfinger ID, it logs me in (as seen in the status line) but I am brought back to the login page. Are you logging in to your microca.st account which has a different following list. What I find most troubling is that there seems to be no ability to search for people.

I do like the way pump.io effectively lets you spy on what others are doing by giving you a record of their activity.
