The amazing Akka project was started by Jonas Bonér in 2009 with the aim to bring the actor model, which has proven to deliver an availability of six nines (99.9999%) and even more, to the JVM. Akka, which is open source and available under the Apache 2 license, offers APIs for both Java and Scala.
