Virgin's bower (
Clematis spp) is a perennial vine with dentate, mostly trifoliate leaves on purple-tinged petioles arranged oppositely on the stem. It produces white flowers which blossom in late summer to early fall.
C. ligusticifolia develops small, flattened fruits with a plume of white hairs.
Toxic components
All parts of
C. ligusticifolia contain protoanemonin, a type of irritant that can result in the development of
contact dermatitis or ulcers in the mouth in horses. Often accompanied by blisters, ulcers, and profuse salivation and colic signs.
