The Greenhouse is a coastal ruin location in Horizon Forbidden West. The ruins were previously a Faro Automated Solutions research facility.

History[]

The Greenhouse opened in 2043, having been constructed from an abandoned industrial site. It served as FAS's lead facility for agricultural technology, playing a pivotal role in the company's transition towards green robotics during the Clawback. Pivotal to this success was the Greenhouse's advancements in automated farming, which employed in-field genetic manipulation to improve yields (as well as robotics designed to work specifically with other FAS machines).

However, the Greenhouse was not without its share of executive meddling. Ted Faro personally shut down an insect protein initiative to focus the Greenhouse's efforts on plant gene-sequencing, and protected an employee who had sabotaged months of research.

In 2049, the Greenhouse began research into Biomatter Conversion as a fuel source. At least one employee, Marjane Nafisi, resigned from FAS in protest out of concerns with its potential military applications.

Faro Plague[]

The biomatter conversion processes developed at the Greenhouse was eventually used for Faro's Chariot line of automated war machines, making it a lead factor in the Faro Plague.

The Greenhouse also developed the "Adamantine Wreath" project; metal flowers that they hoped would fight the swarm by denying raw material to its biofuel converters, a process Tala Aquino sarcastically described as "giving them indigestion." While the design was successful - a form of synthetic plantlife the Swarm was unable to eat - the project was abandoned when projections revealed the devices could not be deployed in sufficient numbers to stop the swarm, or even quickly enough to slow it down.

New World[]

After escaping GAIA's self-destruction, the rogue subordinate function DEMETER took refuge in the Greenhouse's data core. In its unstable, semi-sentient state, DEMETER began deploying the Adamantine Wreaths from the Greenhouse, presumably attempting to prepare for a second Faro Plague.

Nearly two decades following DEMETER's arrival, the Greenhouse was re-discovered by the Quen during their Eastern Expedition.

A week later, the wandering huntress Aloy arrived at the Greenhouse in search of DEMETER, only to be attacked by the Quen soldiers. After being forced to kill the entire garrison, she encountered Alva and forged an alliance to reach the data core. As they made their way to Test Station Ivy to acquire data for Aloy's Vine Cutter, they found logs from Tala Aquino. Using the Vine Cutter, Aloy managed to unlock the Metal Flower generating the vines blocking access to the data core. Once she removed DEMETER from the data core, it also granted Alva access to its archives. Subsequently, when Quen reinforcements arrived, Alva distracted them to avoid having Aloy taken back to Legacy's Landfall.
