The rougarou, also known as the loup-garou[1], was a dangerous dog-headed magical monster that inhabited swampy regions of Louisiana in the United States.[2] Its hair was used as a wand core by wandmaker Violetta Beauvais. According to wandlore, wands containing the hair of this beast were rather suitable for performing the Dark Arts.[2]
History[]
At some point during Barnaby Lee's Hogwarts years, his uncle, Cecil Lee, travelled to New Orleans to study rougarous, preventing Barnaby from inviting him to Jacob's sibling's planned family appreciation feast.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The rougarou is a monstrous creature that features in Cajun folklore.[3] It is a werewolf-like creature generally described as having the head of a dog and the body of a human.[3] Its name derives from loup-garou, the French word for "werewolf", which is itself derived from loup, "wolf", and garou, "man who turns into a beast".[3]
